Dawan, a young village girl in
Thailand, wins a
scholarship to study in the city school. Her brother, Kwai, places second, causing a rift between the two previously-close siblings. This hostility is further exarcebated by Dawan's father, who feels that the city is no place for a girl. Dawan faces obstacles at every turn, and eventually overcomes these obstacles and proves to herself and to others that she is fully capable of handling the scholarship and the responsiblity it entails.

Regarding STTD,it was quite a interesting story but have a not good ending because they did not talk about live at the city and all that so i think the ending was not touching at all but boring....

I think that STTD is a touching story.......and the story inside talks about a brother Kwai and her sister Dawan. At first,Kwai wanted to snatch his sister's only chance to go to the city school to study but then as time went by,Kwai knew that he was wrong........so the results are expected...but if it is not Ms Teo who ask us to post this thing i would.....(listen good) ...would never waste my time on posting this thing..thank you

This book is really interesting. It illustrates life in Thailand then.People live in attap houses and their main source of food is rice.Buffaloes were one of the animals they depended on for farming.Dawan is a girl who is 14 years old,and Kwai, her brother is 13 years old.At that time, there was gender discrimination and boys were more important than girls.Mostly boys were allowed to study.Dawan got to study because Kwai insisted so after he started school shortly. This book is very touching and I think all of you should read it.

While reading the novel, "Sing To The Dawn" by Minfong Ho, I felt as if I am a anonymous charactor in the book. My feelings change, as their's change.
Firstly, in Chapter 5 it talked about how Kwai was furious about winning the "Second Place" for the Scholarship. And while Kwai is talking, Dawan was hurt by his words and his jealousy on his face. At that moment I was really sad and mad like Dawan was. I was very desperate to know what would happen next.
Secondly, in the conversation between Kwai, Dawan and their father. As his father was speaking to Kwai about, HE WAS THE ONE WHO SHOULD'VE GO TO THE CITY SCHOOL. I felt very frustrated along with Dawam. Right after Dawan's father said, "But what rights does your sister have? She only a GIRL." I got so mad that I just banged my palm onto the table.
Lastly, in the last chapter (Chapter 13) where it showed the dialoge of Dawan and her Grandmother about Dawan's worries when she's in the city. I felt so depressed. I felt as if I was the one who's leaving .

If it wasen't for Ms Teo,i would't even visit this blog site to blog at all!!Anyway, this is my first time blogging.Really!!First time in my life!!ok.Time for real buiness. Now,i feel that STTD is actually quite an ok book, though it does not fit my lokings. The book is also quite short, which is good as it is a textbook an i don't need to spend so much time reading it.Anyways,i feel that Minfong Ho is trying to bring out one of the biggest problem in Thailand. The discrmination between the gender, the males and females. In modern fact, people are saying that the males and females are equal, but in actual fact, gender discrmination still happens around the world, even in highly advanced countries such as America!!Want me to give some examples, one of it is the spelling. The term used to define females are longer than the terms used to define males,so it is more toublesome to write terms that describe female.Take no offence,i meant it as a joke.I hope no one will edit it.There are many examples, you can go find out yourself if you are intrested.I hope Dawan a safe journey and don't die in a bus crash like what i wanted when we did the ending of STTD ourself.Another joke!!Frankly,i don't even care if she dies!!So well, ithink i have written enough words,so i think i can end off here if i want. That is if i want. Some other comments, some illustration aren't very good but some are still quite ok.Certain parts of the story aren't realistic as how can the son of the family plead to let her sister study and if he did so,why would he want to do so?Whould he dare to do so?Some questions for you to ponder on.Oh yah, good luck Esmond in your STTD skit!!!!!!!I will support you all the way with my mind. Finally completed one homework!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Diao............... copyrighted by Nicholas Yeow(1E) Anyway, why should i care about Esmond's skit?

Hello, felicia khor here. This is the book review on sing to the dawn.
It is about a young thai girl called Dawan and her younger brother ,Kwai. Both of them wants to go to the city to study and when they come back, they would change the unfairness in the village. But,to study in the city costs alot of money,so they have to compete each other to win the scholarship. It turns out that Dawan wins the exam.Unfortunately,Kwai got second in the examination and her father is against her going to the city to study and insist that her brother should go as he thinks that it is a waste to send girls to study.Because of this matter, the siblings quarrel.Dawan will face many obstcles in this book.In the end of the story, their relationship builds up again, and Kwai helps to persuade their father to let Dawan go.Overall,i feel that this book has used many descriptions, and it was quite touching in the end.It was quite a nice and interesting book.
