this sing to the dawn book....is an interesting story...an be said a true story...it is about a girl, named Dawan, who wanted to study in the city so that she could help the poor village she lived in. to overcome of the injustice from the landlord who always take their sacks of rice... why the landlord owns the land? did he have the rights to take the sacks of rice? what makes him the landlord? what makes the landlord all the land instead of the villagers who worked hard than the landlord? these questions...makes us think deep in thoughts... the economy condition of the villagers.. and,did Dawan have the chance to go to the city? "but she is a girl!" that's the comments from all the people around her. the unfair thing that everybody did to a girl... just because she is a girl, she does have to loose her good chance that every students in the village, including her brother, who hoped they could go? no one wants to help her...she have to struggle with her father for her own rights to go...also with her brother, who get 2nd place after her, which meant that if she didn't go to city, her brother would have the chance instead.. but...there is a special person..who help her ... he have changed his minds... Dawan wanted to be free, like a bird... even, girls, have to get an education..not only guys... we have to show that,we , like Dawan, a brave girl who struggle to have a chance to study...and never give up...take challenge confidently...

Dawan, a young village girl in
Thailand, wins a
scholarship to study in the city school. Her brother, Kwai, places second, causing a rift between the two previously-close siblings. This hostility is further exarcebated by Dawan's father, who feels that the city is no place for a girl. Dawan faces obstacles at every turn, and eventually overcomes these obstacles and proves to herself and to others that she is fully capable of handling the scholarship and the responsiblity it entails.

Regarding STTD,it was quite a interesting story but have a not good ending because they did not talk about live at the city and all that so i think the ending was not touching at all but boring....

I think that STTD is a touching story.......and the story inside talks about a brother Kwai and her sister Dawan. At first,Kwai wanted to snatch his sister's only chance to go to the city school to study but then as time went by,Kwai knew that he was wrong........so the results are expected...but if it is not Ms Teo who ask us to post this thing i would.....(listen good) ...would never waste my time on posting this thing..thank you

Sing To The Dawn is quite a boring book. The storyline is all only about fighting for the scholarship...I think that is about all!Bye!

This book is really interesting. It illustrates life in Thailand then.People live in attap houses and their main source of food is rice.Buffaloes were one of the animals they depended on for farming.Dawan is a girl who is 14 years old,and Kwai, her brother is 13 years old.At that time, there was gender discrimination and boys were more important than girls.Mostly boys were allowed to study.Dawan got to study because Kwai insisted so after he started school shortly. This book is very touching and I think all of you should read it.

While reading the novel, "Sing To The Dawn" by Minfong Ho, I felt as if I am a anonymous charactor in the book. My feelings change, as their's change.
Firstly, in Chapter 5 it talked about how Kwai was furious about winning the "Second Place" for the Scholarship. And while Kwai is talking, Dawan was hurt by his words and his jealousy on his face. At that moment I was really sad and mad like Dawan was. I was very desperate to know what would happen next.
Secondly, in the conversation between Kwai, Dawan and their father. As his father was speaking to Kwai about, HE WAS THE ONE WHO SHOULD'VE GO TO THE CITY SCHOOL. I felt very frustrated along with Dawam. Right after Dawan's father said, "But what rights does your sister have? She only a GIRL." I got so mad that I just banged my palm onto the table.
Lastly, in the last chapter (Chapter 13) where it showed the dialoge of Dawan and her Grandmother about Dawan's worries when she's in the city. I felt so depressed. I felt as if I was the one who's leaving .

If it wasen't for Ms Teo,i would't even visit this blog site to blog at all!!Anyway, this is my first time blogging.Really!!First time in my life!!ok.Time for real buiness. Now,i feel that STTD is actually quite an ok book, though it does not fit my lokings. The book is also quite short, which is good as it is a textbook an i don't need to spend so much time reading it.Anyways,i feel that Minfong Ho is trying to bring out one of the biggest problem in Thailand. The discrmination between the gender, the males and females. In modern fact, people are saying that the males and females are equal, but in actual fact, gender discrmination still happens around the world, even in highly advanced countries such as America!!Want me to give some examples, one of it is the spelling. The term used to define females are longer than the terms used to define males,so it is more toublesome to write terms that describe female.Take no offence,i meant it as a joke.I hope no one will edit it.There are many examples, you can go find out yourself if you are intrested.I hope Dawan a safe journey and don't die in a bus crash like what i wanted when we did the ending of STTD ourself.Another joke!!Frankly,i don't even care if she dies!!So well, ithink i have written enough words,so i think i can end off here if i want. That is if i want. Some other comments, some illustration aren't very good but some are still quite ok.Certain parts of the story aren't realistic as how can the son of the family plead to let her sister study and if he did so,why would he want to do so?Whould he dare to do so?Some questions for you to ponder on.Oh yah, good luck Esmond in your STTD skit!!!!!!!I will support you all the way with my mind. Finally completed one homework!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Diao............... copyrighted by Nicholas Yeow(1E) Anyway, why should i care about Esmond's skit?

Hello, felicia khor here. This is the book review on sing to the dawn.
It is about a young thai girl called Dawan and her younger brother ,Kwai. Both of them wants to go to the city to study and when they come back, they would change the unfairness in the village. But,to study in the city costs alot of money,so they have to compete each other to win the scholarship. It turns out that Dawan wins the exam.Unfortunately,Kwai got second in the examination and her father is against her going to the city to study and insist that her brother should go as he thinks that it is a waste to send girls to study.Because of this matter, the siblings quarrel.Dawan will face many obstcles in this book.In the end of the story, their relationship builds up again, and Kwai helps to persuade their father to let Dawan go.Overall,i feel that this book has used many descriptions, and it was quite touching in the end.It was quite a nice and interesting book.

Ok.......Jasmine here, finally login in-must type something right? Ok, I think STD has a nice plot and characters, but not very interesting. Also, the vocab was probably suitable for a primary 4 kid. I prefer Charlotte's Web- way more unique and interesting. You should check it out.

Hi!you don't need 2 noe who I am. I am posting because Miss teo wants us 2.I think STTD is a very short novel but very touching on how Kwai graciously let Dawan go to the city.I also like the part where Dawan's father let Dawan go to the city.At first, I thought Kwai was a big obnoxious boy, towards the end I realise he isn't like that after all.Never judge a book by its cover,i will remeber thst.

Thank's for creating this blog , Arel . The hmewk. for today is make a blog , do geogy page 45-49 ,math exy 5.1, chinese complete filing ( and remember to return it to me , Royston ), do the english file ( at least the vocab. part and 3 compre qs. each ) . Thats about that . Please do'nt ask me about the blog is optional or not . I also not too sure . And Mr Chew's Science WB ..
STTD is apretty good book . I , however , do not like the illustrations . The content emphasises on nature , especially frogs and pebbles . I like the last few chapters , because the tinge of sadness is just right , not too much or little . Minfong Ho has injected good descriptions but a lack of good vocab . - the book does not have any words sucked into my phrase book . The illustrations - in chap. III , the father repairing the coop is supposed to be worried right ? BUT he is seen to SMILE to Dawan after the cruel landlord took away his RICE ! Honestly , can you laugh when someone takes your favourite softoy ? Overall , the feelings were good but the illustrations were rather poor , full of loopholes . Out of a total of ten , I'll give it a 7.5 .
Anybody wants to act as either Kwai , Grandma , Father , Mother , Dawan or Vichai etc . ? If you do , just type your name and who you want to act as on the chat box , at around 4 - 10 pm. . If all seats are not filled by next Tuesday, voting shall take place .
Notes : No saboing , it must be volunterry . If my spelling is poor , please bear with it for a while . If there is any extra hmwk . , can the person post it up ? HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR !
Esmond . PS. Eh, Arel can have some Singlish ?

Hello!I'm Vivian.I don't like Kwai in Sing To The Dawn.Do you know why?Well...he is selfish, because he wanted the scholarship for himself even though he came in second and that Dawan actually won the scholarship.Dawan said that Kwai wanted the scholarship for himself and so Kwai was angry and pushed Dawan. He was a bit too impulsive! When it was raining and Dawan wanted to give Kwai an umbrella,he did not accept it.But...Kwai also has his good points. When their father told him that Kwai should have the scholarship, he did not want his father to know that he wanted the scholarship so he said that Dawan won the scholarship and that he should not accept it.I think that is about all I have to say about Kwai, bye bye!

Sing to the dawn is a really good book. It is about a girl, Dawan and her brother, Kwai fighting for the scholarship to the city. Dawan won first place but Kwai got in second. Dawan's father was furious upon knowing that she had the chance to study further instead of his son, Kwai. If Kwai told his father that he got in second, he would most likely have the chance to go instead. However, Kwai did not break the news to his father as he thought that his sister, Dawan, got in first so she deserved the rights to go. In the end, Dawan's father finally gave in and let her to the city. The ending, where Kwai bidded Dawan goodbye was rather touching to me. I recommend this book 'Sing To The Dawn' to my fellow classmates and I hope they will like it too.
(P.S. May I apologize to what I wrote about Felicia in my previous post. Sorry. ='( )

Yay! And its my second post. Lame. I Know. XD
Okay....so basically...although i read STTD a long long time ago,(i lost my original copy of the book anyways) i cant remember the whole story now and have read it again. Zzz.
And this is what i have to say, short and well...just plain shortness.
STTD is a really nice book and shows gender discrimination. I feel that Mingfong Ho is a really skilled writer and you all should read her other books! I feel that gender discrimanation pratically is wrong and all human beings should be treated equally.(im drifting away from what i wanted to say right?) So back to the review. Actually....the first sentence is all i could think of and well....thats it! XD
And good luck with the rest of the tests!~
(I did not even finish my math paper. T_T)
And lastly , a reminder on what to study for science and geo.
Geo : Timezones , Latitudes & Longtitudes , Rotation & Revolution , Maps , Physical & Human environments and Oceans. (I think so)
Science : Page 1-20 of textbook.

This book is a pretty good read. Minfong Ho wrote this book which is about a young Thai girl named Dawan who has won a scholarship to study in the City. Her father does not approve of Dawan going to the City school to study because he feels that Dawan, being a girl, cannot do anything with good education. Dawan's father had wanted Kwai (Dawan's brother) to carry on studying in the City school so that Kwai can help the village when he comes back after studying. In the end, Dawan was allowed to study in the City but it was quite a sad ending as Dawan missed everything from her village. - Vanessa
Footnotes: Whew.. managed to log in with help from Isabelle. =)) Good luck for common test next week. x_x I am sure I won't do too good.

Basically, i liked sing to the dawn very much but i dislike
Kwai as he is mean selfish and bossy.
Dawan is very lucky to get the chance to go and
study thanks to her father.
As he later decided to let dawan go to the city... Kwai is so self centered........ >.< -.- ~end of review~

I have just finished reading the book and felt really touched by the ending. There were three scenes in the story that made me almost cry. First part was when the brother was sitting on the bridge, refusing to send Dawan off on her departure date. When he said 'if u come back, we couldn't ever sit on the bridge and just watch the dawn like we used to anymore. You've changed that, you've gone and changed all that already', I felt I really understood what he meant. He was not complaining to Dawan or trying to not let her go, but he was scared, scared of the loneliness, scared of the distance between his sister and himself. Can you imagine a boy at age of 13 has to face a separation from his 12 year old sister who used to be his best friend? And no one knows how long this separation is going to last. He was simply unprepared. The second scene I was tremendously touched was the farewell Dawan's grandmother gave to her. Unlike all the other characters in the book, this grandmother has tremendous heroin spirit just like Dawan herself. Grandmother taught Dawan an important lesson - Dawan has to go to the City School because only then she could realise her potential and live her life to the fullest. Just like a lotus bud, with proper sunlight and good wather, 'it'll unfold'. Even when Dawan was unsure whether she should have the 'change', the grandmother assured her 'there is a beautiful pattern to all this change'. Of course Dawan will change. She will have to change to survive in a city world but even then she could still come back to her hometown to be the girl she used to be. Yes, she will never behave the same way, but that is way of life. We are changing and maturing everyday so she has to face the changes. The last part that strike my heart was when Dawan was disppointed that Kwai would not come and send her off. Sunddenly as her bus was running fast to leave the village, she saw Kwai standing on the bridge, streching both arms 'in a gesture meant both to embrace her and to send her off'. He cares for her! The close bond between them was highlighted here which further convey a sense of saddness as the reader knows that these two kids would not see each other for long time. Minfong Ho has highlighted the problem of gender ineqality in the villages in Southeast Asia. Also, the phonomenon of leaving the village to enter cities is addressed. Indeed, many young people from Southeast Asia came to Singapore to pursue studies is a reality. Although the book never says explicitly which 'city school' it referred to, reader could infer from there. Again, the economic and social development of a country like Singapore is heigntened in the novel. Knowledge from a city country can help people change the backward nature of their hometown; Education in a city country will change many people's life from bad to good. Is it really true? How many people really change the society after accomplishing the education in a big city? Maybe what is changed is their own individual family? But that youthful passion of changing the 'lives of people in their village' was hardly realised or persisted in the end? What a sad truth! Shall we rekindle that passion once again? Or was it a message Minfong Ho was trying to convey? This remains a question to the reader's imagination.
